Microsoft Corp., Healtheon/WebMD, and Humana Inc. have formed a collaboration to offer Microsoft Windows for Smart Card technology to Humana members and enable them to exchange information through the use of Healtheon/WebMD's MyHealthRecord. Windows Powered Smart Cards, which are the size of a credit card, have a crypto-capable microprocessor and can perform a number of practical applications, such as log-ons for Windows 2000; Web and phone authentications; and medical data storage. LifeChart.com, an on-line health service that allows patients and healthcare professionals to access clinical information through the web has expanded its product offering with a Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). WAP-based technology, when available later in 2000, will give healthcare professionals and patients with WAP-ready mobile phones another tool to access and monitor health on-line. LifeChart.com has already introduced the WAP technology for its diabetes monitoring service in Europe, which was launched in November 1999. For its WAP applications, LifeChart.com is working with Nokia. MedicaLogic, Inc. and Laboratory Corporation of America (LabCorp) have formed a joint e-commerce relationship for the delivery of transaction-based lab services. The project allows for the automatic integration of lab results into patients' electronic medical records using Logician electronic medical record technology.
